Commonwealth Grants Approval For
"New" Potomac Hospital

Potomac Hospital received a green light from the Northern Virginia Health Systems Agency and the Commonwealth of Virginia to add 30 beds to its existing 153-bed facility. The Certificate of Public Need (COPN) for Potomac Hospital's additional 30 beds was submitted on June 1, 2002, and received final approval on November 15, 2002.

These additional beds will be included in a new four-story, 180,000-square-foot facility to be built on the campus of Potomac Hospital in Woodbridge, Va., and will replace our inpatient units, which date to the hospital's founding in 1972.

The structure will consist of a ground level for support services and an education center, plus three floors above for patient care. All patient rooms in the facility will be private and will feature state-of-the-art patient care equipment and comfortable décor. Construction on the "new" Potomac Hospital began in early 2004 and is scheduled for completion in 2006. It will have a total of 183 beds.

This $71 million project will be funded through accumulated reserves and industrial revenue bonds, a gift of $7.5 million from the Hylton foundation, and a capital campaign organized by the Potomac Hospital Foundation. The Potomac Hospital Auxiliary has made a generous pledge of $350,000 to the project as well.

Construction contractors are Bovis Lend Lease, New York, and Twin Contracting Corporation, Alexandria, Va.; McCulloch England Associates Architects of Charlotte, N.C., are the architects for the project.
