HEALTHY BEGINNINGS FOR NEW FAMILIES
At Potomac Hospital, our physicians, staff, and community educators know what's important to parents. Together, we've developed a step-by-step plan to help you prepare for baby's arrival.

All classes meet at Potomac Hospital unless otherwise specified. Program dates and registration fees are subject to change.

Tour our labor and delivery suite and ask questions as you go. This tour is for adults only and is included as part of our childbirth preparation classes. We regret that we cannot accommodate children.
Phase 2 - Preparing for Delivery
Childbirth Preparation
We offer evening and weekend classes. You can choose (1) a four-day class on four Mondays or four Wednesdays, 7:00 to 9:30 p.m.; (2) a two-day class on two Saturdays, 9:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.; or (3) a weekend class (Saturday & Sunday), 9:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Certified childbirth educators take participants step by step through the labor process, show effective breathing and relaxation techniques and explain available pain medications. A tour of the maternity unit is included. It is recommended that participants complete these classes at least two to three weeks before their due dates. Schedule early.

Review the labor experience, methods of pain control, and breathing and relaxation techniques. An optional tour of the maternity unit is included.
Phase 3 - Preparing for Baby
Baby Basics: Newborn Care & Living with Baby
Tuesday & Thursday, 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.

Certified instructors will discuss basic newborn care including bathing, feeding, comforting baby, and keeping your baby healthy and happy. You'll also learn about newborn physical, emotional, social, and language development. Instructors will also cover easing separation anxiety, introducing foods, choosing a child care facility, play activities and discipline techniques.
Breastfeeding Basics

A board-certified lactation consultant will discuss positioning the baby for breastfeeding, preventing common problems, and using breast pumps, as well as tips for women returning to work.

This class is designed for those who want to learn adult, infant and child CPR and choking procedures for personal use. A tear–out attendance card is included in the booklet. Written and skills evaluations are not part of this class, and an American Heart Association credentials card is not issued.
Tea for Two: A Recipe for a Healthy Pregnancy
