2007 Outpatient Diabetes Management Program

The Diabetes Management Program at Potomac Hospital is recognized by the American Diabetes Association for quality patient education. Education is the cornerstone of our program. Self-management skills are essential survival skills that can help you avoid, or delay, the complications of disease. Because staying healthy can be challenging, we offer a number of ways to make it a little easier.

All programs meet at Potomac Hospital unless otherwise specified. Please let us know at the time of registration if you are hearing impaired so that an interpreter may be provided. Class dates and registration fees are subject to change.

DIABETES MANAGEMENT CLASSES

Diabetes Management Classes*
Weekday (9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.) and evening (6:00 to 9:00 p.m.) classes meet for two days. Saturday classes are held from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Most insurance plans cover the cost of outpatient diabetes education programs.

Taught by our staff of certified diabetes educators, who are also registered nurses and registered dietitians, this program provides practical advice on nutrition, medications, achieving better blood glucose control, hygiene, sick day management, community resources, techniques for combating stress and exercise. An individual pre-assessment and follow-up nutrition consultation are included. This program is designed to complement your doctor's care and requires a doctor's prescription.

*The Diabetes Management Program has been awarded Recognition by the American Diabetes Association in accordance with the National Standards for Diabetes Self-Management Education Programs.

Gestational Diabetes Management Program
By appointment only. A doctor’s prescription is required.

This two-hour program is offered twice a week for women diagnosed with diabetes during pregnancy.

Cholesterol, Blood Pressure, and Diabetes Screenings, plus Body Composition Analysis
Thursdays, 4:00 to 6:30 p.m. by appointment

Pre-Diabetes Management Class
Dates TBA

$75. Payment is due at the time of registration. You may seek reimbursement through your health insurance provider.  To obtain insurance reimbursement, you will need a doctor’s prescription. Not all insurances cover this program. Self-referrals are accepted. Pre-diabetes is a term used to describe the condition of having blood glucose levels higher than normal but not yet having type 2 diabetes. This class for people with pre-diabetes will show how physical activity and aiming for a healthy weight can reduce or eliminate the risk of developing diabetes. Our certified diabetes educators provide practical information on nutrition, exercise, medications and achieving better blood glucose control.

Get helpful hints for managing your diabetes at this free event from Potomac Hospital. Talk to healthcare professionals and pharmaceutical representatives. Tour exhibits. A presentation by a healthcare professional involved in the care of patients with diabetes will begin at 3:00 p.m.
