After nine months of debilitaing back pain, Mr. Sherrill of Dumfries met with Dr. Lotfi to discuss surgical options and to learn about the new techniques Dr. Lotfi uses to remove herniated discs.
Here’s their story:
Mr. Sherrill: I had a herniated disc that was so painful I literally could not get out of bed some days. One day, I was in a meeting at work and couldn’t get up to leave because of my back pain. I tried all of the treatments that are recommended before resorting to surgery, such as physical therapy, pain killers and shots, but absolutely nothing worked.
Dr. Lotfi: Mr. Sherrill was a prime candidate for Minimally Invasive Spinal Surgery or MISS. With this technique, I use specially designed surgical tools that are more precise, cause less damage to the surrounding tissue and require much smaller incisions. These benefits promote a faster recovery for the patient.
Mr. Sherrill: Since I was in so much pain and had incredible confidence in Dr. Lotfi, I was more than willing to undergo this procedure. The surgery only took a couple of hours at Potomac Hospital and I didn’t even have to stay overnight. To this day I’ve never felt the back pain again. It’s completely gone and I couldn’t be happier.
Dr. Lotfi: We are both very pleased with the results of Mr. Sherrill’s surgery. Less invasive surgical methods have become almost the norm in many surgical fields including cardiology, orthopedics and gastrointestinal medicine. We are encouraged that the benefits of small incisions, shorter hospital stays, less scarring and faster recovery times are now available for many patients who need spinal surgery as well.
