Please note that although Sentara Potomac Hospital Auxiliary volunteers are committed to improving “patient care,” the volunteers have no direct or hands on “patient contact.” Also, volunteer opportunities change on a daily basis and not all positions may be available at the time application is made.
Gift Shop
Assist customers in selecting merchandise and accept cash and credit card payments for purchases, restock shelves, reconcile money in cash register.
Outpatient Surgery (Surgical Center, Potomac Center and Century Bldg)
Welcome patients, stock supplies, assemble charts, offer refreshments, transport patients upon discharge.
Information Desk
Provide information and directions to patients and visitors. Receive and deliver flowers within the hospital. Answer telephone inquiries. Use the computer to locate patients admitted to the hospital, surgical patients, employees and offices and meetings being held.
General Office Help
Assist with filing, computer entry, computer scanning, assembling records and folders, preparing mailings and packets for classes. Areas where help might be needed include the Auxiliary Office, Development Office, Medical Records, Human Resources, Occupational Health Services, Community Education, Care Coordinator, Diabetes Management, Library, and Medical Staff Office.
Emergency Department
Empty soiled linen, stock supplies, run errands, fill blanket warmers and kits used by the medical and EMS staffs, make patient bracelets, escort patients and visitors to the various rooms.
Chaplain Aide
Assist the hospital chaplain by visiting patients, listening to their concerns, comforting them and notifying the chaplain that a clergy visit is needed. Hours as scheduled by the Chaplain. Volunteer will be interviewed and approved by the hospital Chaplain. Minimum educational requirement is a certificate in Religious Studies.
Pediatrics Unit
Assist with visitor control and access into the Pediatric Unit. Stock supplies and provide general assistance to the nursing staff.
Escort (Surgical Center and Century Building)
Serve as a meet and greet volunteer. Assist with visitor control and access as required. Escort patients to surgical area and provide pre-surgical instructions. Offer refreshments and keep family members informed.
Weight Loss Surgery Center
Greet and escort patient to appropriate areas. Deliver specimens to laboratory. Answer phones and deliver messages to appropriate staff members. File patient records.
Pharmacy
Duties include checking expiration dates, deliver medications as directed. Unload incoming shipments and check against invoices. Label medications and stock shelves as directed. Stock computerized medicine dispensing equipment. Sort Pharmacy Journals into employee mailboxes. Update pharmacy journals.
Cardiac Rehab
Support the nursing staff by offering encouragement and support to patients during their rehabilitation process. Demonstrate correct ways to use exercise equipment. Wipe down equipment after every use. Experience as a personal trainer helpful.
Radiology
Greet and escort patient to appropriate areas.
Laboratory/Pathology
File patient tissue blocks and slides and paperwork.
Pet Therapy Teams
Interact with patients, staff and visitors. Program is administered by Occupational Health Services. Volunteers and their dogs must have met the rigorous criteria of Therapy Dog International and Delta Society, national recognized training and registration programs for people and their pets.
